CAMP PROGRAM INFO: For more than 25 years, Hofstra Summer Camps has provided a safe and enriching environment for children in all grade levels. We expect 2014 to be our most exciting summer ever, with thrilling new programs that offer a variety of ways to enrich campers’ social development, creativity, and physical and academic potential.

Hofstra Specialty Camps offers a broad spectrum of programs — fine arts, performing arts, science, tennis, golf, and more than 20 additional specialties — with the flexibility to register for two, four, six, or seven weeks. Campers spend half the day in their chosen specialty and the other half in recreation and instructional swim.

If your camper in grades 2 through 12 wants to improve their athletic skills, he or she can choose Sports Academy Camps in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, wrestling, volleyball, soccer, softball, pep band, dance, and cheerleading.

Does your camper prefer more intellectual or creative pursuits? No problem! Our Learning Institute programs offer wonderful opportunities for students to challenge themselves in positive, enjoyable settings.

And once again, we are proud to partner with Nassau BOCES to offer a wide range of unique and exciting programs for youth in grades 3-11, including our Hofstra Precollegiate Career Discovery Institute for grades 7-11, which gives teens the opportunity to explore possible future careers in culinary arts, veterinary, video production, graphic design, aviation, criminal justice and more! These experiences will help teens explore their passions while gaining solid fundamentals and skills. Many of our staff members and Directors are former campers who grew up at Thomas School and wanted to share the joys they had at camp with their children.

Our Directors are all RTE (Responding to Emergencies) certified, which includes CPR and First Aid (certified by the American Red Cross).

Our lifeguards are Red Cross Certified lifeguards and teach Red Cross certified swim lessons.

Our Riding Instructors are all certified instructors, as well as being certified in CPR and first aid by the Red Cross.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Campers age 13-15 participate in our CIT program where they can choose a specialty area in camp and mentor with staff from that area (Ex: Ride staff, lifeguards, counselors etc.) They also go on trips-some of our past trips have included: overnight to Hershey Park, overnight to Six Flags Great Adventure, day trip to the Waterfront Center (sailing and kayaking), day trip to Mountain Creek water park, overnight to Club Getaway, day trip to Brownstone Adventure Park, overnight Camping/White Water Rafting, etc.)

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Year round ride school with programs for ages 3 and older. Lessons offered include private lessons, group lessons and semi privates. Group lessons are offered full year or seasonally.

We offer camps during school breaks where students can spend the day at the barn taking care of and riding a horse that they are assigned to.

CAMP FACILITIES: Bristol Hills Music Campers live in cabins, rehearse in the dining hall, practice outside (weather permitting) while enjoying nature, have recreation time playing ultimate frisbee, soccer, football, basketball, or swimming. We have 3 brand new bathroom/shower facilities and a huge campfire area. Located in the Bristol Hills, we have the best setting to view spectacular nightly sunsets!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: This is the 60th Anniversary of Bristol Hills Music Camp. We accept band, orchestra and vocal musicians in grades 7-12 who have a passion for music and want to share it with others like them. We offer a Junior and Senior High Concert Band and Jazz Ensembles, a Junior String Ensemble and full Symphony Orchestra, a Vocal Ensemble, a Junior and Senior High All Camp Chorus, daily music electives, numerous small group ensembles, private lessons, including guitar. We offer recitals each evening with performances from staff, counselors, campers and ensembles. We culminate our week with a concert performance of all major ensembles for parents and friends.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Bristol Hills Music Camp offers a wonderful CIT program to those entering 12th grade and have attended our camp for at least 1 year. CITs are campers given opportunities to mentor with veteran counselors with the chance to demonstrate and hone their leadership skills.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Broadway Bound Players (4th - 8th graders) & Broadway Bound Workshop (9th-12th graders)
Broadway Bound Players is a free performing arts program for underserved students seeking opportunities to perform and find a theatre community. Members of this exciting ensemble receive acting, voice, and dance training from professional teaching artists and take master classes with Broadway performers. They rehearse and perform a musical review that they help create. This program culminates with a performance on a professional stage.

The Broadway Bound Workshop is a fully subsidized 8-month program. Members will explore character development through musical theatre, improvisation, monologues, and scene study. The ensemble applies these skills throughout the rehearsal process for a show presented in the Spring. The members in this program develop confidence and competence as performers and as young adults! The ensemble is also given other performing opportunities with Broadway Bound Kids, master classes with Broadway performers, and individual coaching for college auditions.

Students in this conservatory-style acting class will develop fundamentals through the exploration of technique, text analysis, and scene study. Students will work on materials including one assigned classical scene (Shakespeare, Euripides, etc) or contemporary-classical (i.e. Anton Chekhov), and one assigned contemporary scene mid 20th century to present (i.e. Tennessee Williams, August Wilson, Suzan Lori Parks).

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Broadway Bound Kids offers an InterACTive Broadway Program that provides several trips each year for students to see Broadway Shows, and the program includes master classes and/or talkbacks with cast members from the shows. CAMP FACILITIES: Our camper living facilities are beautiful modern cabins, all of which have wood flooring, pine walls, windows, air-conditioning and ceiling and attic fans. Modern updated bathrooms, replete with private shower and toilet stalls, are housed within the cabins. The bunks are spacious with separate rooms to store our camper's clothing. YMCA Camp Weona offers both traditional and high adventure activities. Horseback riding through the forest, kayaking under the blue sky, making new friends, singing by the campfire, jumping into the refreshing pool, learning how to set up a campsite, fishing at the lake; each day is full of adventure. YMCA Camp Weona serves children 7 to 17 years old with exciting summer camp options for one, or two or more week stays. All campers live in one of 18 rustic bunk style cabins with shared restrooms facilities. All staff participate in an intensive week-long residential training that includes safety management, working with children in group settings, leading activities, camp policies and procedures, and child abuse prevention. Necessary staff members are lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certified as well as other nationally-recognized certifications. YMCA Camp Weona takes the health and safety of our campers very seriously.

We have a 6:1 camper-to-leader ratio which assures close supervision of all activities. During the summer session a fulltime health officer lives on site and a physician is on call 24 hours a day. Also, YMCA Camp Weona is certified by the New York State Health Department and has periodic inspections throughout the summer. YMCA Camp Weona is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). ACA is a non-profit organization that member camps join voluntarily. CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: At YMCA Camp Weona, we believe that every child should have the chance to experience camp. The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign provides financial assistance to families within our community who are in need of financial support and may not have the ability to pay the full fee. Financial assistance is determined based on a thorough review of an application and a personal interview with the applicant. Assistance will be granted on the basis of financial need resulting from low income, emergency expenses or other circumstances that inhibit an individual’s ability to pay a prescribed fee. As part of our mission, we teach campers responsibility with an opportunity to Earn Their Way to Camp. Groups of 8-12 campers of similar gender and age attend daily activities together as a cabin with their leaders. The intention is to foster a “family-like” atmosphere within the group. Menu - Our back-to-basics menu is prepared each day in the dining hall. The YMCA offers items that children enjoy in their daily life that help sustain the additional energy needed during long days at camp. Cabin/Bunk Mates - Campers may request a bunk mate within one school grade of each other, are of the same gender, and are registered for the same program. A bunk mate request is included in the parent pack and must be returned three weeks prior to attendance. Requests made after the three-week deadline may not be honored. In order to promote inclusion within each cabin, only one bunk mate request per child will be honored. (Bunk mates must be reciprocal – ex. John picks Tim and Tim must pick John.) Groups of four or more may be split to promote new camper inclusion.

CAMP FACILITIES: Surprise Lake Camp is blessed with incredible natural beauty. Our camp sits on 500 beautiful wooded acres surrounded by an enormous expanse of undeveloped state parkland. Our sparkling, 30-acre lake is nestled between two rugged mountain ridges. It creates a vision of rustic beauty that dances in the heads of visitors years after they've been to camp. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Surprise Lake Camp has a rich history. It was founded in 1902 by the Educational Alliance to provide a summer vacation for Jewish boys from Main Building - 1920 the tenements of Manhattan's Lower East Side. In its first season, it had six tents for 25 campers and five counselors. One of the first campers was Eddie Cantor, who, upon achieving success as an entertainer, became one of the camp's most ardent supporters. Since then Surprise Lake Camp has served thousands of young people, many of whom have achieved prominence, among them, entertainer Neil Diamond, talk show host Larry King, actor Jerry Stiller, and former New York Attorney General Robert Abrams.

In 1911, the 92nd Street Y became partners in running the camp, and the camp office was located at the Y for many years. In 1917, when the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies was created, Surprise Lake Camp was one of the initial member agencies. The camp then became incorporated as a New York not-for-profit in 1920, eventually leading to complete independence from its founding agencies. Over the years, Surprise Lake Camp has been substantially rebuilt three times. In addition, its clientele and program have evolved as the Jewish community has changed. Originally established to provide summer vacations in the country for poor boys from the lower East Side, the camp has also gone through periods when it was dedicated to feeding undernourished boys, operated as a year-round camp which included formal education during the winter, committed to the personal development of children using a social group work model, and run as a general co-ed summer camp with special emphasis on scholarships.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: French Woods Sports and Arts Center provides the summer of a lifetime in a safe, supportive, supervised and age appropriate environment. Campers completely determine which activities they will participate in. Children are offered a wide range of activities that include sports, arts, technology, extreme sports, circus, rock music, electronic music, dance, water sports, DJ and radio, theater, communications, magic, cooking, role playing games, and equestrian. All that and more rolled up together into one incredible summer experience!

There are six activities per day, each one hour in length; three of these periods are called majors and three are called minors.

Majors are chosen at the beginning of each session and are maintained for two weeks. Minors are chosen daily at breakfast. This lets you concentrate on the things that interest you, while giving you the chance to try something new.

Empowering our campers to feel good about themselves and their accomplishments can increase motivation to try harder, try new activities, continues to build self-confidence, and achieve self-efficacy. The GO Project currently serves 722 students in grades K-8 through our summer (GO Summer) and school year program (GO School). Enrichment Coordinator - Each afternoon during the summer, GO Project provides students with a variety of art and movement experiences that intentionally complement and support the morning academic periods. The GO Project is seeking Enrichment Coordinators to oversee the implementation of high quality enrichment programs with our elementary school students. Coordinators will directly supervise 5-10 Activity Specialists and act as a campus leader for one of four sites.

CAMP FACILITIES: Camp Henry Day Camp functions out of 301 Henry Street, a community center with multiple multi-function rooms including a state of the art computer lab, a gym and a kitchen. We also access the surrounding athletic fields and courts for our athletic activities.

Our summer camp is only as good as the staff it hires. That is why we search the globe for the most experienced and enthusiastic staff members we can find. From England to Australia and California to Maine, our staff consists of about fifteen different nations and over twenty states. Everyone comes together with one goal in mind; to make sure our campers have the best summer of their lives!

We are looking for general counselors, specialist counselors, leadership positions, and support staff for the upcoming summer. General counselors spend the day with their division of campers; guiding, supporting, and supervising them as they go from activity to activity.

As a specialist, you concentrate on a specific area, passing on your knowledge to our campers to ensure they are learning or mastering that skill. The leadership roles we fill each summer range from department heads and group leaders to medical staff and office assistants. Lastly, our support staff members work behind the scenes as kitchen staff, maintenance workers, groundskeepers, and housekeepers to ensure the day to day operations of camp are handled.

Our 5 year old program also features a 'Mini Club' period which allows each group to select from a list of their favorite activities to participate in each day.

Our 5 year olds also participate in our unique, values-based, STARFISH program. The STARFISH program not only supports our camp's mission of teaching children the skills of making and keeping friends while building self-esteem; it creates a safe environment that makes accomplishing that mission possible. 6 & 7 Year Olds
Our 6 & 7 year olds take full advantage of our famous 'Club Elective' program on a daily basis, allowing our campers to customize their schedules with their favorite activities! 8 Year Olds
In addition to participating in our great range of traditional activities, our 8 year old campers get the chance to experience the excitement and spirit of teamwork associated with our 'Sports Leagues'. Sports Leagues begin on an every other day basis, alternating with a SECOND 'Club Elective' period. League Teams are divided equally, with the emphasis being put upon good sportsmanship and building self-esteem. Campers may also participate in one of our 'Showtime' musical theatre productions, cook, swim, dance, explore nature, and take advantage everything that our camp program has to offer!

We recognize that our older campers are looking for a more innovative and customizable summer experience so we give it to them! Our 'Club + Sports Leagues' program allows these senior groups to tailor their summer experience for up to two hours each day. Additionally, these older groups have "flex" periods in their schedule throughout the week which allow their group to once again choose between a list of available activities to participate in. CAMP FACILITIES: When campers are not on a trip, they will have a full complement of fun activities in Caedmon’s four-story building. The three youngest groups will also have waterplay 2–3 times per week.

CAMP FACILITIES: We have a 61,000 sq.ft. fully air-conditioned recreation facility with a 24,000 sq. ft. main arena and a 12,000 sq.ft. auxiliary gymnasium. The Main Arena has seating for all campers, counselors and parents. We have an on-site indoor Olympic Pool, classrooms, computer lab, arts and crafts section, Drama & Cheer areas, sports courts, Atrium Game area, movie room and private dining room, and camp office.

We have 60 acres of outdoor fields, all weather track, three NCAA fields (soccer, baseball and softball), special field for early childhood campers, and outdoor courts.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: At Staten Island Day Camp we offer a three day program and programs from four weeks to eight weeks. We have free door to transportation for all five day programs and free extended hours. We have a full sport and recreation program, all adult counselors and an on-site American Red Cross swim program. We have optional clinics in soccer, basketball, digital and computer technology, cheer, drama and literacy and math enrichment. We are celebrating our thirty-fifth year with the same Owner/Director.

We accept personal checks, Master Card, Visa and Discover. Payment plans available. All programs are on-site. We have a low counselor to camper ratio

Our senior staff includes a retired superintendent of schools and principal, school psychologist and teachers. All senior staff are on-site all day every day. We have specialty coaches and specialists for our clinics.

OTHER CAMP INFO:

We have weekly nationally acclaimed professional entertainment, weekly theme-based activities and events. We have swimming four times a week. Swim activities are supervised by two American Red Cross swim instructors and seven lifeguards. All counselors are in the water with their campers. Our adult to camper ratio in the pool is 4:1.
We have a spirit week with special activities every day an on-site Charity Carnival and a "Color War" that takes place the last week of camp
